Battle of the Drugstore MASCARA Brands!

Which drugstore mascara is worth it? That was my question when I asked my Facebook friends what their favorite drugstore mascara brand was and why. I adore my Sephora favorites – Tarte’s Maneater Mascara and Two Faced Better Than Sex Mascara, but they seem to dry out fast, and I want a mascara that would give my ~BOOSTED~ lashes thanks to R+F Lash Boost, an EXTRA BOOST! I nourish my lashes nightly, and it’s always fun to show them off! Especially, when I get asked if they are extensions or strips…nope, all mine!

I rounded up the top 5 drugstore mascaras that were suggested by my friends, and headed to my local Ulta to purchase them. I had a gift card and used a Ulta coupon, so this little experiment ended up costing me about $20 with tax, so that’s a WIN right there!

While my little one took her afternoon nap, it was time to start the experiment!

Here is my Baseline Photo. I’m wearing no mascara and have curled my lashes. My lashes go straight out (thanks to my Asian genes) and as you can see, they are dark, full, and long on their own. I also filled in my brows with Anastasia Brow Pencil.

Maybelline Great Lash – $5.99, a classic mascara that’s been around FOREVER!

Details: Maybelline’s Great Lash Mascara features a lash-doubling formula that glides on to build great-looking lashes. Formula conditions as it thickens with a lash-building brush that makes it easy to get a full-lash look. Washable formula, Ophthalmologist tested, Hypoallergenic tested and Suitable for contact lens wearers.

I remember all the cool high school girls wore this mascara when I was in elementary school, the tube is so iconic in its bright pink and flourescent green pop! For each mascara, I used two coats on my lashes.

The mascara wand was good at separating my lashes, giving it a fan like appearance, and gave me some extra length. Overall, good, but man….taking it off was a mess! That’s the only downside I had with it, and I can only imagine what it would look like if I was crying or caught in a rainstorm!

L’Oreal Telescopic – $9.99 this was the Top Pick by my friends!

Details: L’Oréal Telescopic Mascara features a special brush with a flat side to lengthen lashes up to 60%, and a comb side to separate lashes with precision. Removes easily with soap and water. Ophthalmologist tested. Allergy tested. Suitable for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers. Fragrance-free.

The wand was very skinny, and created a nice definition on my lashes. It did give them an appearance of being super long, like almost to my eye brow! I felt that it didn’t give me that volume in my lashes, however.

Maybelline Colossal Big Shot Volum’Express – $7.99

Details: Unleash girl boss lashes, now in daring hues! Maybelline’s Volum’ Express The Colossal Big Shot Mascara x Shayla delivers fully loaded volume in just one coat: 8 out of 10 saw root-to-tip volume, instantly. The Big Shot brush features unique, wavy bristles that cradle lashes, while the collagen formula delivers dramatic volume.

  • Ophthalmologist tested
  • Suitable for contact lens wearers
  • Volumizing mascara provides root-to-tip volume
  • Big Shot brush features unique wavy bristles that cradle lashes
  • Available in Maybelline x Shayla power shades
  • Washable mascara formula

Well, it has “GIRLBOSS” in the description, so that had me from the get-go! I prefer a full volume look to my lashes, and this one did not disappoint! The wand separated my lashes, giving them a full body from root to tip and length. Compare it side by side to the L’Oreal Telescopic and you can see the difference. This is definitely a contender, but I had two more to try.

Covergirl Lash Blast Volume – $8.99

Instant volume and fullness. Smudge and wear-proof. Hypoallergenic and suitable for contact lens wearers.

I removed the mascara from my lashes once more, and tried the Covergirl Lash Blast on my right eye (left side in photo). I was impressed by the buildable volume it gave with the second coat, and the length it gave as well. Overall, it was good, and I wasn’t disappointed. It also washed off without causing a big mess or tugged at my lashes.

Covergirl Peacock Flare – $8.99

Details: Flaunt a full fan of thick, lush lashes with CoverGirl’s Peacock Flare Mascara. Revolutionary soft-grip handle is designed to fit in your hands and gives precision control.

  • Feather-fan brush catches, coats, and separates each lash
  • High-build formula provides instant clump-free volume for lashes that are dark, lush and fanned out for a dramatic transformation
  • Does not flake or smudge.

The tube is super pretty! Isn’t it funny how the packaging can make a difference? I applied the Covergirl Peacock Flare on my left eye (right side) and felt that the wand was rather skimpy. I also felt that it caused some clumps, even though the description said that it was clump-free. Between the two Covergirl mascaras, this one gave me the length and volume that I like.

And, my favorite is…

My FAVORITE! Maybelline Colossal Big Shot Volum’Express!
